Hosted version feature requests: edit email alerts; edit reg page

Asked by [ Editor ] , Edited by Steve King [ Editor ]

I have been banging on the hosted version of Shapado for up to 8 hours a day.. I tweaked the widgets and layout… added CSS/JS.. created pages.. populated questions.. made/deleted users.. edited content.. etc etc.

As far as I can tell its rock solid ..there are occasionally some wonky URLs produced by the virtual hosting system.. but they are generally non fatal.. I have not seen any serious faults or loss of data/configuration… the performance is pretty much flawless.. no substantial latencies for any admin or user operations..

My only wish list features prior to going into production and inviting real users:

  1. editing of email alert templates
  2. editing of registration page ( its not clear which fields are optional)
  3. editing of sidebar..
  4. backup/archive utility for data dump download

I’m using an ugly innerhtml JS hack to modify the sidebar content now.. would be nice to be able to drop any content into sidebar as needed (as with headers, footers)

for completeness .. my list includes the previously discussed announcement options ( on every page, on just one page, users can turn off for session duration, etc)

IMO, this is a wonderful social Q/A platform already and it’s just begun !!

Many thanks

+1 These are essential features for hosted – of course if you run a standalone you can do all of these things & more :) Standby…

yes roger that.. I just have not had time to put up my own server for Shapado codebase.. can’t wait!

well if you read my rambling and sometimes irreverant guides you can save yourself a bit of the learning curve, I’m getting the hang of it slowly. The rails way of doing things is well… really very different to asp.net grins fun though

yes Rails is a bit outside our scope ( java, .net, python, php).. but its amazing how fast the Shapado team bangs out features and fixes.. so I’m impressed by rails.. I don’t know about extreme scalability but the mongodb should help with partitioning, etc.

also.. I did not mean to imply by the above feature wish list that I would not go live with the hosted version.. I plan to do that soon! onwards..

@socialfreeq well obviously it doesn’t work properly yet, and the styles are still not quite there, but here it is MY FIRST SITE! http://beta.think.it:3000/ it uses the blue theme somewhat modified and running in development mode… also it’s on a slow server but I’m pretty happy so far

congrats.. I just posted a few questions to beta.think ..works great.. but IMO you need to throw a bit of hardware at it.. not fair to run Shapado codebase on an iPad ;)

LOL yeah, it seems to be cranking it – but I guess the concept is proven – now to get a “proper” server :)

NB: Also it could be a problem that its running the development version as apparently there is some issue with a memory leak & ruby that you don’t get on production version – that in fact will be my next thing to try

(sorry I used my female test persona, susan, there for a minute.. back to my normal self now) considering the millions of users you may attract.. I suggest 8 cores, 128GB main memory and a 10TB SAN for your production server.. ie. THINK big.. or not.. :)
