When Importing StackExchange Sites, do Links Change?

After the StackExchange 2.0 announcement today, I feel we will have to find an alternative solution for two sites soon. Shapado looks really cool, and I guess many people will look into it very soon. However, I was wondering whether a migration would keep our links intact? That would be a huge advantage! All those hard-to-earn backlinks would die, otherwise… Thanks, Chris

some urls will be inevitably broken, for those links we will add the http 301(Moved Permanently) status code.

also, note that this solution is recommended by google

Thanks, this answers my question. I don’t understand why links will “inevitably” break, but if you can associate the old link and the new link through a 301, that pretty much does the job! Kewl!

When is an ‘in place’ migration scheduled?
